A Rose Can Never Become A Lilac - homage to Ryoko Ikeda's "Rose of Versailles"-era work
pen/sharpie sketch
I've recently fallen in love with Ryoko Ikeda's "Rose of Versailles", especially some of her very stylized manga work, which has an interesting 1970's-fashion influence, with all the characters having ample, flowing hair, theatrical poses and really dramatic accompanying dialogue. It's kind of a shame that the anime watered down her dialogues quite a bit, but I suppose a lot of the lines would have sounded a bit too cheesy spoken. The highlighted text in this sketch is from a really fantastic scene in the anime, lines said by Andre, the main character, Oscar's (Oscar is actually a woman), closest friend. He says these words at a pretty crucial and kind of jarring scene, but the meaning behind the words is extremely important to both the plot of the story as well as to tomboys around the world.
