Hikari to Kage - character study/fanart
sepia india ink, colored pencils
More Rose of Versailles (aka Berusaiyu no Bara)! This time, my BeruBara art actually involves characters FROM BeruBara, namely Oscar and André. Oh, I love these guys. It's my first fanart of the two of them that I consider to be "official." This was originally just an ink sketch of them, and I just felt that it was begging for color. The coloring job itself is decent, not my best, but I spent about two days working on it off and on. It's dreamlike, isn't it? I feel it fits with the lives they lead and the time they were living in for the most part.
The title means "Light and Shadow" -- it's a theme that's common in BeruBara, as the ending song (André's anthem of sorts) says "you are the light, and I am the shadow" as well as "you are life, you are my life." It's very romantic and powerfully symbolic of their relationship, as André really is Oscar's shadown. So, I made Oscar's colors very warm and bright, and André's cool and dark. I don't know why, but when this scanned the colors became much more subdued. The colors are actually quite vibrant--Oscar's lips and shirt are very strong crimsons, her pants and hair have more orange and yellows, and this scan makes everything seem like earthtoned clay colors. It still looks nice, but it's not what the original resembles.
Their hair is very voluminous, in the manner of the original manga itself, of course! (And who doesn't love voluminous hair? It was the 70's after all~~!)
