Nativity Icon
acrylic on wood -- religious icon attempted in the Byzantine style
Yes, I paint, but most of what I paint is pretty irrelevant to this gallery so I don't show it. This piece I'm particularly proud of so I'm including it. I made this icon for my parents this Christmas and tried my best to emulate the Byzantine style I grew up with in terms of composition and style, and had mixed results.
Part of the problem, I think anyway, is that icons are always done in egg tempera, which I don't have. Acrylic paints have a totally different consistency, and even though I treated the wood with gesso and used gel medium with my paints, acrylic is way tackier and goes on less smoothly than tempera. Also, the colors in this icon are very very bright, which are nice I suppose, but not in concord with tradition. Oh well, my parents liked it, I guess that's all that matters.
